Hercule François de France, known as François, Duke of Anjou, was a prince of the French royal house and the youngest son of Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici. Despite physical frailties resulting from smallpox in childhood, he held prominent places in the line of succession and received the duchies of Anjou, Touraine and Berry in 1576. His political role became significant in the turbulent context of the French Wars of Religion.

Frustrated by disagreements with his brother, King Henry III, François drew closer to Protestant leaders and helped bring about the signing of the pro‑Protestant Edict of Beaulieu in 1576. In 1580 he was invited by the States General of the United Provinces to assume a protectorate that might evolve into sovereignty, a move promoted by William of Orange against Spain.

His expedition to the Low Countries (1582–1583) exposed personal and political weaknesses: initially useful against the Duke of Parma, he grew unpopular and the campaign culminated in the disastrous attempt on Antwerp, when his troops were ambushed and he was forced to flee. The failure ended his Dutch ambitions and damaged alliances.

At the same time he was a suitor of Elizabeth I of England, courting her in person between 1579 and 1581, but the project collapsed under political and religious objections. Struck by malaria, he returned to France, reconciled with Henry III and died young in 1584, leaving significant consequences for the succession and for the escalation of the French Wars of Religion.
