Charles-Ferdinand d’Artois, Duke of Berry, was a member of the French royal family whose life and career reflected the upheavals of the Revolution and the Restoration. The youngest son of the future king Charles X, he went into exile after 1789 and joined the counter-revolutionary forces—first with the Prince of Condé and later in the Russian army—remaining active in the legitimist cause during the Napoleonic wars.
After living in the United Kingdom during exile, he returned to France with the Restoration of Louis XVIII and was given command of the Paris garrison, taking on a significant military and political role in reestablishing the monarchy. In 1816 he married Maria Caroline of Naples and Sicily; the marriage produced children whose legitimist descent had symbolic importance for Bourbon supporters.
Berry’s notoriety also stems from his assassination in Paris in 1820 by a Bonapartist, an episode that shocked public opinion and exacerbated political tensions between monarchists and liberals. His legacy remains linked to the fragile transition between revolution and restoration and to the Bourbon line of succession during the nineteenth century.
