Francis III of Brittany, known as Francis of France, was Dauphin of France and Duke of Brittany in the early 16th century. The eldest son of Francis I and Claude, Duchess of Brittany, he was born in Amboise and from an early age occupied a central place in the crown’s dynastic and diplomatic plans, becoming the subject of marriage proposals aimed at securing international alliances. During his childhood he went through a notable episode when he was sent as a hostage to the court of Charles V after the French defeat at Pavia (1525). That experience lasted about three years and left lasting physical and psychological effects. He formally inherited the duchy in 1524, although actual administration remained in the hands of royal officials. His premature death at eighteen, in Tournon-sur-Rhône (1536), prompted suspicions of poisoning, but sources point to natural causes, possibly tuberculosis, worsened by his poor health after captivity. His death cleared the way for the succession of his brother Henry, who later effectively united Brittany with the French crown.
