Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, was Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1780–1806) and a field marshal who played a notable role in the European wars of the late 18th century. Trained in military practice from a young age, he distinguished himself in the Seven Years’ War and established a reputation as a strategist in infantry campaigns and irregular warfare, also serving as a general in the Prussian army. As sovereign he was known as an “enlightened despot”: learned, prudent, and fiscally responsible; he worked to restore the duchy’s finances and brought it closer to Prussia. His court maintained cultural ties with Enlightenment Europe; he traveled widely and cultivated relationships with figures such as Voltaire and Winckelmann. Brunswick’s military fame reached international prominence in 1792 when he led allied forces against the French Revolution and signed the so‑called Brunswick Manifesto, whose controversial content strengthened the republican reaction in France. He returned to command in the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France and was mortally wounded after the defeat at Jena (1806). His legacy is ambivalent: he is recognized for military skill and ducal administration, but is also associated with a turning point in the radicalization of the French Revolution.
