Francisco de Assis María Fernando de Borbón was king consort of Spain as the husband of Isabella II, a role he held from 1846 to 1868. A member of the House of Bourbon, he was the son of Infante Francisco de Paula and Luísa Carlota of the Two Sicilies. His marriage to the queen had a strong dynastic and political character, aimed at consolidating internal alliances without creating claims to other thrones. In his public capacity he received the style His Majesty, the rank of captain general, and the Order of the Golden Fleece, but his political influence was marked by palace intrigues and crises that intensified during Isabella II’s reign. The instability culminated in the Revolution of 1868, which forced the royal family into exile and weakened his position in Spanish affairs. After the partial restoration of the monarchy he lived more quietly: he separated from the queen and withdrew for a time to private life in France, later returning to reside in Spanish palaces under the reign of his son, Alfonso XII. Twelve children were born of the marriage, of whom only five survived, leaving a dynastic legacy marked by losses and by a limited, often conflicted, political role.
