Alfonso of Spain, Duke of Calabria, was a prince of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies whose public significance stems chiefly from the succession dispute that marked the family in its final decades. The son of Prince Carlos of the Two Sicilies and Princess Mercedes, Princess of Asturias, Alfonso claimed the headship of the house in 1960 after the death of Ferdinando Pio, asserting that the renunciation his father had made of the succession was null. That controversy pitted him against the branch led by Ranieri, producing a split that also affected the grand mastership of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George. Married to Princess Alice of Bourbon-Parma in 1936, he had three children, including Carlos, who would later use the title Duke of Calabria. Alfonso’s historical significance is tied not to territorial rule but to his dynastic role and to recognition by other European royal houses, which in various ways accepted the claims of one branch or the other. From birth he received high honorary distinctions, reflecting his place in the European dynastic network. He died in 1964, leaving behind the persistent dispute over legitimacy within the House of the Two Sicilies, whose repercussions continued into subsequent generations.
