George, 2nd Duke of Cambridge, was a member of the House of Hanover and a prominent figure in the British military aristocracy of the 19th century. A grandson of King George III and son of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, he made his mark through a career in the British Army that culminated in his appointment as Commander-in-Chief in 1856, a post he held for 39 years—the longest tenure in the institution’s modern history. He took an active part in the Crimean War, commanding the 1st Division at the battles of Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman and during the siege of Sevastopol, and was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1854. Earlier he had served as Inspector of Cavalry and in 1862 received the rank of field marshal. His term as Commander-in-Chief was noted for resistance to far-reaching military reforms, including merit-based training and promotions, a stance that shaped the debate over modernization of the British forces in the second half of the 19th century. Because of his institutional role and long leadership, George left an ambivalent legacy: he strengthened the Army’s administrative authority but also came to personify conservative resistance to organizational and technical change.
