William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, was a member of the British royal family and a grandson of King George II. The younger brother of George III, he served as an army officer and held prestigious military posts, serving as colonel‑in‑chief of the 13th Foot Guards and of the 1st Foot Guards, and was promoted to field marshal in 1793. He was also rector of Trinity College Dublin from 1771 to 1805.

He was granted the titles Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh and Earl of Connaught in 1764 and was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1762. He lived mainly in the vicinity of Windsor — including Cranbourne Lodge and St Leonard’s Hill — and served as a protector of Windsor Forest.

He is also known for his secret marriage in 1766 to Maria Walpole, the nature of which was only acknowledged after the Royal Marriages Act of 1772. The marriage produced three children, of whom only one, Prince William Frederick, left descendants connected to the family. He also had an illegitimate daughter whose line survived.

He remained notable for his courtly position and ties to the eighteenth‑century monarchy, dying at Gloucester House, London, in 1805. His legacy remains associated with his institutional and military role within the British royal family.
