Frederick II of Holstein-Gottorp was a Danish prince of the House of Holstein-Gottorp who briefly succeeded his father, Adolf I, as duke of the Gottorp portions of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein (1586–1587). Born in 1568, he received a humanist education under the Protestant French tutor Antoine Cauchie and studied at the universities of Heidelberg and Strasbourg, where he was praised for his piety and learning. When Adolf I died, the plan to divide the inheritance among his sons did not materialize: only Frederick was of age and he assumed government as sole duke on 1 October 1586. Earlier efforts to secure for him the coadjutorship of the bishopric of Schleswig failed, and the see came to be treated as a Danish royal fief. Frederick’s reign was cut short by his premature death in 1587 at the age of nineteen, unmarried and without issue. His death sparked disputes between the Gottorp family and the local estates over the hereditary character of the duchy. He was succeeded by his brother Philip and was buried in the crypt of Schleswig Cathedral.
