Maximilien Joseph Eugène Auguste Napoléon de Beauharnais, known as the Duke of Leuchtenberg, was a 19th-century European aristocrat whose career linked Bavaria and the court of the Russian Empire. The son of Eugène de Beauharnais and grandson of Empress Joséphine, he inherited the title and most of the family fortune in 1835 and thereafter entered the dynastic and military circles of the high nobility. Married in 1839 to Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaïevna, a daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, he moved to Saint Petersburg and became part of the Russian imperial family. Although he served in the army, his renown rests chiefly on his patronage and scientific pursuits: he was notable as a collector and mineralogist, supporting research and technical institutions. Appointed president of the Imperial Academy of Arts and director of the Institute of the Corps of Mining Engineers, he influenced the development of arts and sciences in Russia during the period. His career was cut short by tuberculosis contracted in the 1840s, which led to his death in 1852, leaving descendants who intermarried with several European royal houses.
