John Albert of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin was a member of the House of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin and served as regent of two duchies in the German Empire. A career military officer in the Prussian army, he was also noted for his public activity connected to the German colonial movement, being one of the founders of the Alldeutscher Verband and serving as president of the German Colonial Society from 1895. After the death of his brother Frederick Francis III, he assumed the regency of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin (1897–1901) on behalf of his nephew Frederick Francis IV, governing until the heir reached majority. In 1907 he was chosen regent of the Duchy of Brunswick, a post he held until 1913, when the succession was resolved by a marriage between the houses of Hanover and Hohenzollern. Known for his interest in social issues within the duchy, he adopted modest governing practices — cutting household expenses and maintaining direct contact with local institutions and citizens through weekly assemblies. During the First World War he remained active in defense of the colonies and, in 1917, became honorary president of a pro‑war party. He married twice and left no issue. His public role is defined by his regencies and his participation in the colonial debate and conservative networks of the Empire.
