Carlo Emanuele I, known as “il Grande” and nicknamed Testa di Fuoco, was the 11th Duke of Savoy and ruled for nearly fifty years, from 1580 to 1630. Stern and ambitious, he became known as a warlike prince and a skilled diplomatic operator, seeking to extend Savoyard influence over northern Italy during a period dominated by rivalries between France and Spain and the turbulent fallout of the wars of religion. He led several military campaigns: he annexed Saluzzo, Trino and Alba, but also suffered losses such as Pinerolo and lands beyond the Alps. His offensive against Geneva (the famous Escalade) failed, and remains marked in regional memory and military iconography by the “Savoyard” helmets captured by the Swiss. A patron of the arts and an author, Carlo Emanuele combined cultural activity with political ambition — even plotting in Balkan theaters and negotiating with great powers through treaties and alliances, sometimes with France, sometimes with Spain. His actions helped sharpen proto‑nationalist discourse in seventeenth‑century Italian poetry and politics. Legacy: a controversial figure due to his boldness and impulsiveness, he left the memory of a rule focused on dynastic expansion and consolidation, with lasting effects on the geopolitics and culture of Piedmont and the Savoyard states.
