Egan Arley Bernal Gómez is a Colombian road cyclist, noted for his rapid rise in the international peloton after beginning in mountain biking. Breakthroughs in the junior ranks with world championship podiums and Pan American titles led him to switch to road racing in 2016 with the Italian team Androni Giocattoli‑Sidermec, where he collected stage‑race victories and repeatedly excelled as the best young rider. Winning the Tour de l’Avenir in 2017 solidified his reputation and secured him a place with the British team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) in 2018.
On the WorldTour, Bernal proved himself a climber and a capable time‑trialist, adding stage wins and young‑rider jerseys in races such as the Tour de Romandie and Paris‑Nice. In 2019 he achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first Latin American to win the Tour de France, a result that placed him among the leading figures of contemporary South American cycling. His career has also included crashes and recoveries, showing resilience in returning to form after injuries.
Known for an aggressive climbing style and the capacity to lead Grand Tours, Bernal has inspired a new generation of Colombian cyclists and helped confirm Latin American presence in the sport’s top competitions.
