Maurizio Pollini was an Italian pianist. He began studying piano at six years of age, under the guidance of Carlo Lonati. From the age of thirteen, he became a pupil of Carlo Vidusso. At sixteen, he began his studies in composition with Bruno Bettinelli.
In 1960, he won the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. After the competition, he played Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 at La Scala in Milan, under the direction of Sergiu Celibidache.
His first recording for Deutsche Grammophon: 'Three Movements from Petrushka' by Stravinsky and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 7, made in 1971, was the beginning of a remarkable discography.
Arnold Schoenberg's centenary was celebrated in 1974. In the same year, in London, Pollini performed the complete works for piano by that composer. Berg, Webern, Pierre Boulez and even Stockhausen have a place in this pianist's repertoire.
In 1987, he played Beethoven's five concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic, under the direction of Claudio Abbado. Pollini presented the complete cycle of Beethoven's 32 sonatas in 1993-94 in Berlin, Munich, New York, Milan, Paris, London and Vienna.
In 2001, his recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations won the 'Diapason d'or' award.
