Ian Fraser Kilmister was an English singer, bassist and songwriter, known for being the founder of the English rock band Motörhead. He was adored by his fans for his authentic presence, playing style, tone, and distinctive voice. The nickname "Lemmy" is said to have come from the time Lemmy was a roadie and always asked to borrow £5 (in English: 'lemmy a fiver' — lend me a fiver), although the musician himself said in his autobiography that he had already been called that since the age of 10.
Before becoming a musician, he was a roadie for singer and guitarist Jimi Hendrix, played in the bands Rockin' Vickers and Sam Gopal, and was a roadie for the band Hawkwind, where he filled in for the bassist who had missed the show — having left the instrument in the band's van. Expelled from Hawkwind after being detained in Canada with amphetamines, he formed his band, originally called Bastards, later renamed Motörhead; the name comes from the last song Lemmy wrote for Hawkwind. His autobiography, White Line Fever, recounts his career and the main highs and lows faced by the band.
