George Catlett Marshall Jr. was a United States general, a combatant in World War I and World War II, renowned for being the author of the Marshall Plan, which helped rebuild Europe devastated after World War II (1939–1945).

He served as the United States Secretary of State. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for the Marshall Plan initiative. He also served as Secretary of Defense.

During World War I he planned training and various operations. In 1917 he was sent to France, where he worked on planning operations for the First Infantry Division. In 1918 he moved to the Army headquarters from where he coordinated one of the war's most important operations that led to the defeat of the German Army on the Western Front: the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (Ofensiva Meuse-Argonne).

From 1920, as an aide to Army Chief of Staff John J. Pershing, Marshall was tasked with reorganizing the Army's training and with teaching new and modern military techniques. In 1934 he was promoted to colonel, and then to general in 1936. In 1939 Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed him Chief of Staff of the Army, a position he held until 1945.
