Gustav III was King of Sweden from 1771 until his assassination in 1792 and remains a central figure of the period known as Gustavianism. A prominent proponent of enlightened absolutism, he consolidated royal power with the 1772 coup and the Act of Union and Security of 1789, a measure that curtailed noble privileges while expanding the participation of other social groups in government. As a patron of the arts and culture, he founded the Swedish Academy, encouraged the establishment of the Royal Opera and the Dramatic Theatre, and sponsored influential artists and writers, leaving a lasting legacy in Swedish literature, music, and architecture. He also promoted liberal reforms in the economy and civil rights — including limited legalization of Catholic and Jewish presence — and introduced judicial reforms that restricted the use of torture. In foreign affairs, he sought to restore Swedish influence in the Baltic and to pursue military ambitions, with mixed results: the victory at Svensksund became a point of prestige, but failures in campaigns against Russia limited his goals. His death as the result of an attack at a masked ball ended a reign marked by strong political centralization, vigorous cultural activity, and tensions with the aristocracy, the consequences of which shaped Swedish constitutional history in the ensuing decades.
