A Capetian prince of the Spanish branch of the House of Bourbon, Alfonso Carlos Ferdinand (1849–1936) was a dynastic figure and social activist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The son of the claimant Juan de Bourbon and of Maria-Beatrice of Austria-Este, he took part in the Third Carlist War and remained closely tied to legitimist and Carlist circles that claimed thrones in Spain and France. When, in 1931, he became the oldest Bourbon in the direct line, his supporters began to recognize him as head of the House of France and as the last direct Carlist claimant to the Spanish crown, granting him courtesy titles such as Duke of San Jaime. His position fueled dynastic rivalries and reconciliations, including meetings with the former king Alfonso XIII to coordinate monarchist interests. Beyond succession claims, Alfonso Carlos led campaigns against dueling, writing and mobilizing international networks for the abolition of the practice. His death in 1936 provoked divisions among Carlists over the succession, with part of the movement accepting the regency he designated and another part supporting Alfonso XIII’s line.
