Johann Ernst IV was Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, a member of the Ernestine line whose lands in Saxony were fragmented in the 17th century. A son of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha, he initially ruled jointly with his brothers after their father's death in 1675, until the territorial partition of 1680, when he became sovereign of Saxe-Saalfeld, receiving, among other places, Gräfenthal, Probstzella and Pössneck.
The partition left Johann Ernst in a weaker financial and political position than brothers such as Frederick, a situation that led to prolonged inheritance disputes. Succession conflicts over Coburg, Eisenberg and Römhild marked much of his public life, extending beyond his death and only being definitively settled by the emperor in 1735.
He married twice—first to Sophie Hedwig of Saxe-Merseburg and then to Charlotte Johanna of Waldeck-Wildungen—and left descendants who ensured the continuity of the Coburg line, notably through Francis Josias. His legacy is tied to the complex genealogy and territorial divisions that characterized the German nobility of his era.
