Carl Philip Vasa was a Swedish prince and Duke of Södermanland, Närke and Värmland, a member of the Vasa dynasty and the youngest son of Charles IX and Christina of Holstein-Gottorp. Known for a reserved temperament and an education overseen by J. Skytte, he was regarded as thoughtful, devout and brave—qualities that distinguished him at court and in the military campaigns of his brother, King Gustav II Adolf.
During the period of instability in Russia, the city of Novgorod proposed him as a candidate for the throne between 1611 and 1613, a bid that did not prosper against the selection of Michael Romanov; because he was underage, his mother administered his duchy from 1611. In 1621 he joined the Baltic operations led by Gustav Adolf and took part in the siege of Riga, where he received praise for his practical work and for rallying the soldiers.
Shortly after the capture of Riga he fell ill and was moved to Narva, where he died in January 1622. In 1620 he had entered into a secret marriage with Elisabet Ribbing, which produced a posthumous daughter, Isabel Carlsdotter, later known as Gyllenhielm. Carl Philip’s name remains associated with the founding of the town of Filipstad in Värmland, named in his honor.
