Magdalene of Bavaria was a princess of the House of Wittelsbach and, by marriage, Countess Palatine of Neuburg. The youngest daughter of Elector William V of Bavaria and Renata of Lorraine, she played a notable role in the dynastic marriages of the early 17th century, attracting high‑born suitors and taking part in negotiations that reflected political tensions between branches of the Habsburgs and the Bavarian court. In 1613 she married Wolfgang William, heir to the Palatinate‑Neuburg; the union — driven by both confessional and dynastic interests — led to her husband's conversion to Catholicism in 1614, an important event in the context of the Counter‑Reformation. In her new principality Magdalene actively promoted religious life, supporting chapels and the Jesuit presence. She is described as politically skilled and ambitious, with influence over family and state decisions made by her husband and brother. She had one son, Philip William, and was buried in the crypt of the Jesuit church in Neuburg after her premature death at forty‑one. Her legacy is associated with the strengthening of Catholic hegemony in the region and with the marital alliances that shaped local geopolitics in the years leading up to the Thirty Years' War.
