Maria Carolina Augusta of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, known as Lina, was a princess of the Two Sicilies by birth and became Duchess of Aumale through her marriage to Henri, son of King Louis-Philippe I. Raised at the imperial court in Vienna and later in Naples, she was part of the nineteenth-century European dynastic networks and attracted the attention of the House of Orléans at a time when there were few suitable high-nobility candidates. Her marriage, celebrated in 1844, had a political and social character: although not described as a passionate union, it consolidated ties between the Bourbon and Orléans houses. Settled in Paris and later at the Château de Chantilly, the couple maintained a relationship marked by mutual respect; Henri avoided taking up permanent residence in Algeria during his governorship in order to remain at his wife's side. The fall of the French monarchy in 1848 forced the family into exile in England, where Lina developed a close friendship with Queen Victoria and lived in residences provided by the British court. The duchess endured family tragedies — including the deaths of several children — and died in 1869 in Twickenham. She was buried in the chapel at Weybridge, and her remains were later transferred to the Royal Chapel of Dreux.
