Margarethe of Brunswick‑Lüneburg was a German noblewoman of the House of Guelph who, by marriage, became Duchess of Saxe‑Coburg. Born in Celle as the daughter of Duke William the Younger and Princess Dorothea of Denmark, she belonged to an extensive regional lineage and took part in the dynastic alliances typical of late 16th‑century nobility.
On 16 September 1599 she married John Casimir, becoming his second wife. The wedding followed the courtly ceremonies of the time and was notable for the lavish maternal dowry: the gilded royal carriages that accompanied the celebrations are now part of the Veste Coburg collection, where they are displayed as material testimony to the court of that era.
Her marriage to John Casimir is described as happy, although it produced no children. After the duke’s death in 1633, the principality passed to his brother John Ernest, and Margarethe returned to Celle, where she spent her final years.
She died in 1643 and was buried in the Stadtkirche of Celle; her life reflects the marriage politics, property arrangements, and commemorative practices of German princely families of the period.
