Agnes of Brandenburg was a princess of the House of Hohenzollern whose life unfolded at the center of the German dynasties of the early seventeenth century. A daughter of Elector John George of Brandenburg, she was part of a broad network of marital alliances among principalities, first marrying Philip Julius of Pomerania and residing with him at Wolgast Castle. Although she left no descendants, she took part in regional economic initiatives, such as financing a mint in Franzburg (1615), and gave her name to the Agnisenhof, a folwark on the island of Rügen.
Widowed in 1625, Agnes retained territorial privileges in the widow district (vidualitium) of Barth until her second marriage in 1628 to Duke Francis Charles of Saxe-Lauenburg. That marriage took place in a turbulent political context—Francis Charles enlisted the influence of Albrecht von Wallenstein to ensure that Agnes would keep the district of Barth for life, despite the formal loss of rights caused by the new union.
Agnes’s life illustrates the political role of naval princesses at German courts: bound by dynastic ties, their marriages and acts of patronage shaped territorial and economic relations among small states. She died in 1629 without issue, leaving primarily the legacy of a mediator between territorial houses and local government and economic initiatives.
