Ed Sullivan was an American television host whose long career made him a central figure in U.S. popular culture during the 1950s and 1960s. A former boxer and sports journalist, he moved into entertainment as a columnist and in 1948 became the presenter of the Sunday program that would come to be known as The Ed Sullivan Show, broadcast by CBS until 1971. The show served as a decisive platform for artists who became global phenomena—from Elvis Presley and The Beatles to The Supremes, the Jackson 5 and the Rolling Stones—and became famous for introducing and solidifying popular music talent of the twentieth century. Sullivan was known for his instinct for acts that appealed to mass audiences and for investing heavily to secure big names. Over the course of his career he amassed prestige and influence in television, inspiring portrayals in popular culture and appearances as himself in films and musicals. His legacy remains tied to the role of “star-maker” and to his program’s lasting influence on the history of American television.
