Eddie Barclay, born Édouard Ruault, was an influential French record producer and music entrepreneur. Self-taught on the piano and an admirer of American jazz, he first made his mark in Parisian clubs and, after World War II, founded record labels and nightclubs that positioned him within the city’s music scene. His career solidified with the creation of Barclay Records, which became France’s largest record company in the following decades.
Barclay became known for discovering and promoting leading francophone artists such as Dalida, Charles Aznavour, Mireille Mathieu, Claude Nougaro and Eddy Mitchell, and for bringing and distributing recordings by American jazz and rhythm-and-blues artists. His early commitment to the new disc formats (33 rpm and 45 rpm) and to international partnerships helped spread microgroove recordings in France.
Recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit and for giving artistic freedom to his signees, he earned the nickname “empereur du microsillon.” He was also a public figure famed for his extravagant social life in Saint-Tropez. In later decades he sold part of his company and gradually withdrew from the record business.
