Edgar Degas (Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas) was one of the most influential French artists of the nineteenth century, working as a painter, printmaker, sculptor and photographer. Historically associated with the group known as the Impressionists, Degas was notable for a singular artistic stance: although he took part in the movement’s exhibitions, he kept distance from its practices by favoring interior compositions, figure studies and an approach grounded more in drawing and memory.

He is especially renowned for his depictions of the world of ballet — dancers, rehearsals and backstage scenes — and for his striking use of pastels, which gave his work distinctive tones and textures. His works explore psychological and formal observation of figures, often employing innovative framings and unexpected crop that foreshadow modern sensibilities.

Trained through intensive copying of Renaissance masters and study at the École des Beaux-Arts, Degas reconciled academic tradition and avant-garde tendencies, provoking controversy among critics of his time. Much of his output is held in public collections in Paris, where he remains an essential reference for the study of the transition from academicism to modernity in the visual arts.
