Rachel Robinson (born Rachel Annetta Isum) is an American nurse and educator, known for her role as the widow and steward of the legacy of baseball player Jackie Robinson. A nursing graduate of UCLA with a master’s in psychiatric nursing from New York University, she worked as a researcher and clinician at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, served as an assistant professor at the Yale School of Nursing, and was director of nursing at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. In the 1970s she broadened her work into social and business initiatives: she established the Jackie Robinson Development Corporation, focused on housing projects for low- and moderate-income families, and in 1973 founded the Jackie Robinson Foundation. The foundation provides scholarships and leadership programs for minority students, having supported more than a thousand scholars and achieved a notable graduation rate among its beneficiaries. Over decades, Rachel Robinson has received numerous honors for her contributions to education, civil rights, and the preservation of Jackie Robinson’s memory, including university awards and recognition in the sports community. Her career combines clinical practice, teaching, social management, and activism in support of equal opportunity.
