Edgar Dean Mitchell was a United States Navy officer, test pilot, aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut, known for being the sixth man to walk on the Moon as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 14 (1971). On that mission he spent about nine hours working on the lunar surface at Fra Mauro, helped collect nearly 50 kg of samples, and assisted in operating experiments and scientific equipment that expanded knowledge of the lunar terrain. Initially trained in industrial management, Mitchell later earned degrees in aerospace engineering and a doctorate in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT. Before his selection to the astronaut corps in 1966, he served as a naval aviator, took part in flight test programs, and worked as an instructor in advanced mathematics and navigation for astronaut candidates. After leaving NASA he devoted himself to studies of consciousness and paranormal phenomena, founding scientific initiatives to investigate those areas. His career combines technical and operational contributions from the Apollo era with a controversial legacy of research into topics outside conventional scientific consensus.
