Edmund William Gosse was a literary critic, poet, translator, bibliophile and art historian active in Victorian and Edwardian England. He began his career at the British Museum and later worked as a translator at the Board of Trade; in 1904 he became head of the Library of the House of Lords, a post he held until 1914. He became a central figure in the literary and artistic circles of his time, friends with figures such as Robert Browning, Robert Louis Stevenson, Hamo Thornycroft and Henry James.

Gosse was notable for promoting Scandinavian literature in the United Kingdom: he translated and popularized works by Henrik Ibsen (in collaboration with William Archer) and wrote criticism that introduced Nordic dramatists to English audiences. His close relationship with the sculptor Hamo Thornycroft led him to document the renewal of British sculpture, coining and chronicling the movement known as the New Sculpture.

The author of poetry, essays and critical studies — including works on Thomas Gray, John Donne and other classics — he also wrote the autobiography Father and Son, famed for its psychological analysis of his family relationships and for shaping modern reception of memoir writing. He was additionally editor of important anthologies and of the 1911 edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica.
