Edoardo Amaldi was an Italian physicist prominent in the second half of the 20th century, recognized both for research in particle and nuclear physics and for his institutional role in rebuilding Italian science after World War II. A member of the famous Via Panisperna group led by Enrico Fermi, he contributed to fundamental studies on nuclear fission and later pursued research on magnetic monopoles and gravitational waves. As an organizer of research, Amaldi was a founder of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the Frascati National Laboratories, and he took part in the creation of CERN and the European Space Agency. He held the chair of experimental physics at the University of La Sapienza for more than four decades and served as president of scientific institutions such as the INFN and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Active in disarmament causes, he joined the Pugwash movement and helped establish educational initiatives on disarmament and conflict. His legacy includes pedagogical and scientific publications, a documentary archive preserved in Rome, prizes and honors bearing his name, and the naming of an ESA transfer vehicle and an asteroid in his honor.
