Edward C. Stone was an American space physicist and a central figure in modern planetary exploration. A professor at the California Institute of Technology, he directed the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from 1991 to 2001 and was the principal scientist of the ambitious Voyager program, which sent two probes to the giant planets and, decades later, became the first to reach the interstellar medium.
Over fifty years leading the Voyager project, Stone coordinated observations of the flybys of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, overseeing major discoveries such as active volcanism on Io, the identification of new moons and ring systems, and the probes’ eventual crossing of the heliopause. His skill at integrating multidisciplinary teams and deciding on targets and instrument use made him the mission’s public spokesman for its achievements.
Beyond his role on Voyager, Stone led multiple missions and scientific initiatives: he served as principal investigator on several experiments and helped establish major facilities, including supervising construction of the W. M. Keck Observatory and supporting the creation of LIGO. His career earned significant recognition and secured a lasting legacy in space physics and the management of large scientific programs.
