Edward Lear was an English painter, illustrator and writer whose work ranged from naturalistic depiction to literary invention. He began his career as a zoological draftsman, producing detailed studies of birds and reptiles that earned him scientific recognition and illustrated publications; at the same time he made precise landscapes during travels in Italy, Greece, Albania, Calabria and Corsica, gathered in several travel albums. From the mid-1840s he expanded his activity to teaching and literature: he taught drawing to members of the monarchy and published the first Book of Nonsense, the inaugural work of his output of nonsense poems and illustrations. In this vein he became known for inventing forms of verbal and visual humor, popularizing limericks and creating fantastic characters and alphabets. His legacy is twofold: he contributed both to Victorian naturalistic illustration and to humorous poetry in English. Works such as Nonsense Songs and Stories and his travel albums continue to have cultural influence, appearing as references in later adaptations and citations.
