Edwin Meese III is an American attorney and public figure associated with the conservative wing of legal and political circles. He served as United States Attorney General during the Ronald Reagan administration (1985–1988) and previously held senior posts in that administration, including White House Counsel and chief of staff to the governor of California. His career combines public service, legal teaching, and involvement in conservative think tanks and organizations. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, Meese served in the Army and worked as a prosecutor and private attorney in California before joining Reagan’s team. He became known for his ability to render legal and political positions in accessible language, and for his active stance in defending public order policies during episodes of protest in the 1960s and 1970s. After leaving the cabinet, he remained active in conservative institutions and advisory boards, and devoted himself to writing and public debate on law and politics.
