Edwin George Morgan was a prominent Scottish poet and translator of the 20th century, associated with the Scottish Renaissance. Widely noted for his formal versatility—from sonnets to free verse, concrete poetry to experimental forms—he explored themes ranging from everyday life to time travel and outer space, blending humor, absurdity and technological reflection. This range of voices and styles became his trademark.

Beyond his poetic output, Morgan played an important role as a translator, working from languages such as Russian, Hungarian, French, Italian, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese and German. His 1952 translation of Beowulf and his versions of authors including Montale, Neruda, Brecht and Pasternak helped broaden anglophone access to both classical and contemporary writers.

His academic career at the University of Glasgow and institutional recognition—including his appointment as Glasgow’s first poet laureate and as the first Makar of Scotland—cemented his cultural influence. Prizes and honors awarded over decades attest to a lasting legacy in Scottish poetry and literary translation.
