Edwin Muir was a Scottish poet, novelist, translator and critic, known for direct, intense poetry that explored existential themes and the tension between a rural paradise and industrial modernity. Born in the Orkney Islands, his idealized childhood contrasts with the family’s move to Glasgow—an experience Muir reinterpreted as a passage from an “Eden” to a degraded world, a dichotomy that permeates much of his work. Alongside his wife Willa Muir, he translated major German and Central European authors, including Franz Kafka; the couple became known for careful, collaborative editions that remain in circulation today. He published several volumes of poetry between 1925 and 1956, as well as novels and critical studies, notable for using accessible language to address deep questions about time, identity and history. Institutionally, he served as Director of the British Council in Prague and Rome and was Warden of Newbattle Abbey College; he received the CBE and was appointed Norton Professor at Harvard. His legacy endures in his influence on later poets and in the continued presence of his translations and poetry collections.
