Frederick Christian (1722–1763) was Elector of Saxony for only 74 days, succeeding his father in October 1763. A member of the House of Wettin, he reached the succession after the premature deaths of his brothers and lived with a childhood paralysis that required him to use a wheelchair. Despite his physical limitations, he became known for his interest in the arts—especially music—and for his engagement with Enlightenment ideas, expressed in reflections on the duties of princes toward their subjects. Frederick Christian’s brief government immediately dismissed the unpopular Count Heinrich von Brühl, whose policies had ruined the electorate’s finances and dragged Saxony into the Seven Years’ War. To confront the crisis, he promoted administrative and economic reforms—the so‑called Rétablissements—aimed at cutting court expenses, simplifying administration, and restoring public credit. He appointed members of the middle class to government posts, signaling openness to technical expertise over noble privilege. He died of smallpox in December 1763; his short rule is nevertheless remembered for attempts to restore the finances and for embracing Enlightenment principles that marked a political transition in Saxony.
