Maria Anna Sophia Sabina Angela Francisca Xaveria of Saxony was Electress of Bavaria by marriage to Maximilian III Joseph and played a significant role in dynastic politics at the end of the 18th century. The daughter of King Augustus III of Poland and Archduchess Maria Josepha of Austria, she belonged to a family network connected to the principal European courts, which shaped her influence and standing. Childless, she took on a diplomatic role and defended Bavarian interests after her husband's death in 1777. She led negotiations to preserve Bavaria’s independence against Austrian ambitions and supported the succession rights of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld line, opposing Elector Charles Theodore’s attempts to cede territories to Austria. Those territorial maneuvers culminated in the Bavarian War of Succession (1778) and in the formation of the Fürstenbund by Frederick II of Prussia, which halted Austria’s plans. Widowed, she lived at Fürstenried Palace and received recognition from the Bavarians and from the heirs of the Zweibrücken line, among them Maximilian I Joseph, who would succeed to the electorate.
