Elena Caffarena Morice was a Chilean lawyer, jurist and political activist, regarded as one of the country’s leading public figures of the twentieth century. A graduate of the Universidad de Chile, she early committed to providing free legal defense and to the struggle for women’s emancipation, organizing efforts to secure women’s economic and political autonomy. In 1938, together with Olga Poblete, she founded the Movimiento Pro-Emancipación de las Mujeres de Chile (MEMCh), which pursued a broad agenda including labor rights, maternal and child health, breastfeeding and access to information about abortion, while also promoting women’s participation in public life. MEMCh published the bulletin La Mujer Nueva as a forum for debate on everyday and international issues. Throughout her career Caffarena advocated legal mechanisms for civil protection and authored works on matrimonial regimes, amparo and Chilean jurisprudence. During Pinochet’s dictatorship she continued activities supporting victims of repression, founding and coordinating organizations for human rights defense and child protection. Her work left a lasting legacy in Chilean feminism and the struggle for civil rights.
