Elena Viacheslavovna Dementieva is a former Russian professional tennis player noted for her consistency and for having one of the strongest records among women who never won a Grand Slam. She reached a career-high world No. 3 in singles and No. 5 in doubles, and won 16 WTA singles titles and six doubles titles. Her most emblematic achievement was the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, adding to the silver she won in Sydney in 2000. Dementieva was runner-up at two Grand Slam tournaments (Roland Garros and the US Open, both in 2004) and reached seven additional major semifinals. She was part of the Russian team that won the Fed Cup in 2005. In doubles she claimed the 2002 WTA Championships title alongside Janette Husárová and finished runner-up twice at the US Open. Known for an all-court game and for fighting back even while managing injuries, she stayed inside the world’s top ten with few interruptions from 2003 to 2010. She retired after the 2010 WTA Championships, leaving a reputation as one of the leading players of her generation and a key figure in Russian tennis in the early 21st century.
