Elena Poniatowska is a Franco-Mexican writer and journalist whose work occupies a central place in Latin American literature and social journalism. The author of short stories, novels, chronicles, poems and plays, she became known for reportage works that give voice to marginalized groups, notably Hasta no verte Jesús mío — based on extensive interviews with the washerwoman Josefina Bárcquez — and the chronicle La noche de Tlatelolco, about the 1968 student massacre.
From the start of her journalism career in the 1950s, Poniatowska cultivated a writing practice committed to social struggles and human rights, a recurrent theme in her reporting on earthquakes, social movements and the conflict in Chiapas. Her political commitment and identification with the left earned her the public nickname “La Princesa Roja.”
Over the course of her career she received numerous awards and honors, among them the Premio Nacional de Periodismo and the Cervantes Prize (2013), securing national and international recognition. Author of dozens of books, cofounder of editorial and cultural initiatives and founder of a foundation bearing her name, she left a lasting legacy in Mexican public consciousness and in the literary documentation of social struggles.
