Elinor Donahue is an American actress whose career began in childhood and who achieved wide recognition on television in the 1950s and in subsequent decades. She became known for playing Betty Anderson, the eldest daughter on the sitcom Father Knows Best (1954–1960), a role that shaped her public image during an era of family-oriented programs that helped define American television culture. Before starring on TV, she worked as a child performer in musicals and studio films, appearing in productions such as Tea for Two (1950) and Girls Town (1959). Over the course of her career she moved easily between film, series and recurring roles, standing out in popular shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, Star Trek (episode “Metamorphosis”) and The Odd Couple, and making later appearances in hits like Pretty Woman and Friends.
