Elinor Glyn was an English novelist and screenwriter, recognized as a pioneer of erotic fiction aimed at women in the early 20th century. Author of works that provoked both scandal and fascination — including It, Three Weeks and Beyond the Rocks — Glyn helped shape a more open sexual imagination in popular culture and coined the use of “It” as a euphemism for sexual attraction. Born into a family with aristocratic connections, she received an education that opened doors in high society and later in Hollywood, where she worked in the 1920s adapting and promoting her novels for silent film. Her work in the industry helped cultivate stars such as Clara Bow, who became associated with the term “The It Girl.” Her personal life fed much of her fiction: relationships with members of the aristocracy and episodes from her life provided material for narratives that challenged the moral norms of her day. When her husband ran into financial trouble, Glyn maintained the family’s standard of living through frequent literary output. Her legacy persists in her influence on the literature and cinema of the period, in spreading new models of female sexuality, and in the continued presence of her works in translations and editorial collections.
