Élisabeth de Gramont, Duchess of Clermont-Tonnerre, was a French writer and aristocratic figure who moved from noble circles to progressive political and cultural positions. Known as the “Red Duchess” for her support of socialism and feminism, she took part in Popular Front demonstrations and became a public voice in social debates of the early twentieth century. Her public notoriety also grew from her long-term relationship with the American writer Natalie Clifford Barney, with whom she maintained an affectionate bond celebrated in Paris’s literary circle. That relationship, notable for its persistence even alongside other romantic experiences, helped shape her image as a woman ahead of her time. Author of memoirs and essays, she published works such as Mémoires d’Élisabeth de Gramont (1929) and La Famille des Clermont-Tonnerre (1950), as well as pieces on fashion, society and biographies. Born into an illustrious family — the daughter of the 11th Duke of Gramont — she retained ties to the family’s historic properties, among them the Château de Clermont-Tonnerre. She died in Paris in 1954 and was buried in Ancy-le-Franc; her legacy combines aristocratic presence with public commitment to women’s and political issues, and a literary output focused on family memory and portraits of her era.
