Elizabeth Bishop was an American poet recognized as one of the most important voices in English-language poetry of the 20th century. Raised between the United States and Canada, she developed a style marked by descriptive precision and a patient process of refining lines, sometimes spending months or years on a single poem. Her work evokes varied landscapes — from her childhood in Nova Scotia to her experiences in Brazil and Europe — and pairs close observation with subtle reflections on loss, identity, and dislocation. Collections such as North & South (1946), A Cold Spring (1955), and Questions of Travel (1965) established her reputation; she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1956 and received other major awards, as well as Guggenheim fellowships and teaching posts at institutions including Harvard and MIT. Her long residence in Brazil, where she had a relationship with Lota de Macedo Soares, influenced poems and translations that brought her voice into contact with Brazilian landscapes and social contradictions. Known for friendships and dialogues with figures such as Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell, Bishop left a legacy of formal precision and thematic sensitivity. Her work continues to be studied for its ability to transform personal and geographic experience into poems of great economy and intensity.
