Elizabeth Warren is a legal scholar, university professor and American politician, a member of the Democratic Party and senator for Massachusetts since 2013. Before entering politics she was best known as a law professor specializing in bankruptcy law and financial regulation, holding faculty positions at institutions such as the University of Houston, the University of Texas, the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. She is the author and coauthor of several influential books and studies on commercial law and consumer protection. Over the past decades, Warren rose to national prominence for her work during and after the 2007–2008 financial crisis, advocating for stricter banking regulations and leading efforts to create financial oversight mechanisms. She was a key figure in creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and served as a special advisor during the Barack Obama administration. Elected to the Senate in 2012 and reelected in 2018, she has focused her legislative work on consumer protection, fighting corruption, economic opportunity and social security. A member of the party’s progressive wing, she has chaired committees and served on key Senate panels, and was a Democratic presidential primary candidate in 2020, finishing third in the primaries.
