Émile Duclaux was a French biologist and biochemist notable for his role in consolidating modern microbiology. A close collaborator of Louis Pasteur, he took part in research on fermentation, microbial diseases, and the refutation of spontaneous generation, contributing to practical applications in winemaking, brewing, and the fight against phylloxera. As Pasteur’s successor as director of the eponymous institute, Duclaux expanded research on enzymes and their biochemical importance — his 1877 review helped establish concepts that influenced enzyme nomenclature. He published foundational works, including a treatise on microbiology and a biography of Pasteur, reinforcing both research and scientific outreach. His work was multidisciplinary, covering studies on cheese, milk composition, capillarity, and medical hygiene, as well as agricultural and bacteriological issues.
