Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, was an English nobleman who rose to prominence as a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. The son of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, he survived his family's political downfall and regained standing at the Elizabethan court, receiving titles and offices such as the earldom of Leicester and the chancellorship of the University of Oxford. His personal influence with the queen shaped much of his public career. Dudley’s private life was the focus of scandal and suspicion that limited his advancement: the 1560 death of his first wife, Amy Robsart, under controversial circumstances made any public marriage to Elizabeth impossible and generated accusations that followed his reputation for the rest of his life. Secret marriages and disputes over the legitimacy of a son also tarnished his image and led to later litigation. In military and diplomatic matters, Dudley was given command in 1585 of the English intervention in the Netherlands against Spain, being appointed governor-general of the United Provinces. His conduct, however, was criticized for a lack of political and military skill, leading to conflicts with local leaders and a campaign that achieved little. His legacy combines courtly prestige and controversy: he is remembered both for his closeness to Elizabeth I and for the questions that surrounded his private conduct and his competence as a commander.
