Prince of Greece and Denmark Georgios was a member of the Hellenic royal family and a public figure at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The second son of King George I of Greece and Grand Duchess Olga of Russia, he trained in the Danish naval tradition under the guidance of his uncle, Prince Valdemar, and took part in international events such as the organization of the 1896 Olympic Games, chairing the subcommittee for aquatic sports. Appointed High Commissioner of Crete during the island’s transition from Ottoman rule toward union with Greece, Georgios exercised broad powers in a tense administration, clashing with nationalist forces led by Elefthérios Venizélos. His administration ended in 1906 after diplomatic negotiations, and Crete declared union with Greece in 1908. He married Marie Bonaparte in 1907; the marital relationship and his wife’s intellectual and political connections — including figures such as Aristide Briand and Sigmund Freud — marked family life. The marriage produced two children, Petros and Eugenie. Georgios remained active in public life and retained dynastic ties for decades, dying in 1957 as a senior member of the House of Oldenburg.
