Emma Lenora Borden was a domestic figure and companion to her younger sister, Lizzie Borden, in a prominent family in Fall River, Massachusetts. Born in 1851, she took part in local social and religious life, attending the congregation and participating in the charitable activities that defined the family’s circle. She is remembered chiefly for the secondary role she played in the context of the notorious 1892 murder. Although she was never formally accused, Emma became linked to the case because of her closeness to Lizzie and the attention the media and investigators paid to the Borden family. Contemporary testimony indicates that she and Lizzie kept a discreet routine and that the two sisters, together with the housekeeper, were the only women actively living in the household in the years before the events. After the trial and Lizzie’s acquittal in 1893, Emma remained in Fall River and kept a private life until her death in 1927. Emma’s story is intertwined with the Borden case: her life illustrates how criminal events and sensationalist coverage can leave a lasting mark on people who were not principal actors yet become part of the public imagination surrounding an unsolved crime.
